I am bored, and there’s nothing I want to watch. I decided to watch Mad Men.
I must be a glutton for punishment.
I am only on season one.
The depravity of the people portrayed in the show is staggering to me.
There’s no conscience, no remorse, virtually no boundaries, life lived as if there are no consequences.
Don Draper, the main character, had a side piece. He also wanted to bed another woman who owned a department store. Yet, he gets angry with his wife because his boss acted inappropriately towards her. But his wife did not respond to Draper’s advances positively. She pushed him away. But her cheating husband believed he could be angry with her.
The constant ogling of the office women. The overt glances of desired sexual interplay, open raw desire.
They are always drinking alcohol. Always. They don’t need a reason. Don’t care about their family waiting at home.
Yet, Draper somehow knows the running around on his family is wrong but he still does it.
And Draper isn’t alone in the philandering behavior. Pretty much every male is undressing the office women with their eyes, and sometimes it happens.
Some (if anyone reads this, that is) will tell me that’s how it was back then. I say that doesn’t make it right at any time in history, in any context.
We were led to believe the 1950s was decade of pure Americanism. Families went to church, fathers were usually home in the evening, smoking a pipe or cigar, reading a paper.
But what we got was a decade of consumerism that has been rekindled in today’s world. We see it with influencers and other wannabe influencers peddling fake lifestyles.
Anyway, those are my takeaways from season one. Let’s see if it gets better.
