Defending Calvinism Against Calvin

I’m tired of all the tired arguments that attempts to discredit Calvinism based on horrible historical situations and events that happened when Calvin was alive. Calvin and Servertus, and another one I read today was Calvin beheading a 16 year old boy for disobeying his parents.

I will explain why those two deaths happened. And it isn’t because of Calvinism itself.

The reason why these two events happened was because of Calvin’s eschatological views. His views on eschatology are not part of what is considered Calvinism proper. He was a postmillennialist. The basic understanding of postmillennialism is the church is to establish the 1,000 year period of the world being governed by the Mosaic Law, and once that happens Christ will return. Therefore, some calvinists and Reformed who are postmillennial believe we must incorporate the Law. The Bible does not teach that anywhere.

The five points of Calvinism is evident throughout scripture. Dismissing it because Calvin had an incorrect eschatological view and thought that the Mosaic Law ought to be observed is a weak argument because the person who is using that argument doesn’t want to have to confront the doctrine of election and the absolute sovereignty of God in all things.
