Softening the Bible Because We Think We Need To

I think pastors avoid talking about some of the graphic elements and descriptions because they don’t know how to handle it. I’m going to share a few quotes from the OT.

And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that Yahweh had left him. Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza

And David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent. Now when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this young man?” And Abner said, “By your life, O king, I do not know.” And the king said, “You inquire whose son the youth is.” So when David returned from striking down the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand.

Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slaughtered them there.

They were making their hearts merry, and behold, the men of the city, certain vile fellows, surrounded the house, pounding the door; and they spoke to the owner of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house that we may know him.” Then the man, the owner of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my brothers, please do not do evil. Since this man has come into my house, do not commit this disgraceful act. Behold, my daughter who is a virgin, and his concubine—please let me bring them out that you may violate them and do to them whatever is good in your eyes. But do not commit such a disgraceful act against this man.” But the men were not willing to listen to him. So the man took hold of his concubine and brought her out to them; and they knew her and abused her all night until morning, and they let her go at the breaking of dawn. As the day began to dawn, the woman came and fell down at the doorway of the man’s house where her master was, until full daylight.

Harlotry, wine, and new wine take away a heart of wisdom. My people ask their wooden idol, and their diviner’s wand declares to them;
For a spirit of harlotry has led them astray,
And they have played the harlot, departing from their God.

Then the young men who grew up with him spoke with him, saying, “Thus you shall say to the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us.’ Thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins! So now my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

Saul then said, “Thus you shall say to David, ‘The king does not desire any dowry except one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. Then his servants told David these words, and it was right in the eyes of David to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the days had expired, David rose up and went, he and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law.

I could quote many more but I think I made my point. Samson having his eyes gouged out. David holding Goliath’s head in his hand, the blood dripping from his severed neck. Elijah slaughtering the prophets of Baal, showing no mercy. The men of Gibeah repeatedly raping a concubine. The book of Hosea is God talking about Israel playing the harlot, and God does not pull any punches in His selection of words. Rehoboam using locker room talk. David collected foreskins from the penises of 200 Philistines.

We should not be shy or apologize about what is written in the Bible. It is God’s word from beginning to end. He put it all in there for His children to read. All is meant for our instruction. Even some of what Jesus said would be considered graphic or violent.
