Anachronistic Hermeneutics

The church is weak in the Western World.  We have been ripe for takeover to a century or more.  The leaders of the church have changed the gospel.  Then have lied to us because they have told us that we need to be attractive to the world in order to win the world.  They have told us we need to have rock concert arena shows to worship properly.  We need pop song lyrics that say nothing to appear relevant. We have locked the true gospel in the basement in a forgotten room so we can preach one that tickles the ears. “Jesus loves you as you are, and there is no need to change.” We have embraced sinful lifestyles because we believe that God is not only okay with it but also is impotent to change us.

One of the popular hermeneutics (a way to interpret the bible) used today is the anachronistic hermeneutic. We read our current cultural norms into the text to interpret the text.  An example is the Paul’s teaching of a woman being a pastor of a church.  The common rhetoric against this is cultural norms.  Paul wrote as he did in the first century because that was the cultural norm.  And since we are more advanced in our culture in regards to a woman’s role then Paul’s teaching in not applicable today. Women can be pastors. The bible is either true for all time or it isn’t the true Word of God.

This anachronistic hermeneutic has led to women pastors, acceptance of same-sex attraction, softening of sin by calling them mistakes, lack of any pursuit of holiness, among others.  The last one is really the root cause of all the others. We do not try to conform to Christ.  There is no attempt to put away sin, to stop feeding the flesh. We have just accepted that we going to sin and God cannot help us. We teach that all Jesus can do is hold our hand and tell us it will be over soon. And it has lead to bible being viewed as culturally irrelevant. It has lead to the teaching that the local seeker-driven church (not the church as the bible teaches, aka the elect) as the salve, the only place of refuge, and the pastor is the equivalent as an apostle. Witness how they act and you will see that most are prideful and love the attention. Humility is not an attribute they possess because they are fulfilling God’s purpose for them.

The whole counsel of the gospel needs to return to the church.  The preaching of the Law of God, that we are in rebellion against Him, that we have sinned against Him by breaking His commandments, that we destined to eternity in hell unless we repent of our sins and put our faith in the Jesus the Son of God who died on our behalf for our sins. Sin needs to exposed and dealt with because at the moment, the church’s sins against God are piling up because we know better that God does on how to reach the lost.

Simply put, the churches today need to repent of our prideful rebellion and teach the whole bible. We need to stop worrying about what people think and worry about what God thinks.

  1. You nailed it!

The seeker-sensitive church paradigm has been fully implemented in the USA church. We should judge any new form of “doing church” by the results it produces. And the results of the Seeker-friendly movement has accomplished exactly what you say. It’s devastating

We’ve put so much effort into being relevant to the lost. Yet we’ve become totally irrelevant to them. We look, live and sound just like them. We have nothing different to offer them. We say “come follow Jesus and he will change your life.” All the while our lives remain unchanged. Why should they follow OUR savior if we won’t even follow him?

Who do we blame for this?

    God? Surely not.

The people of God? Maybe a little, but they’re following the leaders.

The Church leadership? ABSOLUTELY. It is their fault.

They’ve led the church down this path. Their vision, leadership and effort has done this to the church. We are woefully unprepared for the hard times that lie ahead.
